How Often Should Extraction Systems Be Cleaned?

TR19 is the industry standard for the cleanliness of ventilation systems published by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA). It sets out the requirements for the inspection, testing, and cleaning of grease extract systems in commercial kitchens.
Insurance companies increasingly require TR19 compliance as a condition of cover. If a fire breaks out in your kitchen extraction system and you can't provide evidence of regular cleaning to TR19 standards, your insurer may refuse your claim.
Local authorities and fire safety officers also reference TR19 during inspections. Non-compliance can result in enforcement notices, fines, or even closure orders.
TR19 recommends cleaning frequencies based on usage:
Your cleaning provider should assess your system and recommend an appropriate schedule.
A compliant TR19 clean covers the entire extraction system from the canopy filters through the ductwork to the fan on the roof. The process includes pre-clean inspection, removal and cleaning of grease filters, internal duct cleaning using specialist equipment, fan cleaning and inspection, and a post-clean report with photographic evidence.
